An early summer sunset sail on Barnegat Bay.

Ocean Beach Unit 1
Lavallette, New Jersey

1

The start of another great sunset on Barnegat Bay.

The wind is steady, out of the south, at 10 to 12 mph. 2

3

Just a comfortable beam reach from east to west and back again, making precise alterations in course and sail set... To keep the setting sun out of our eyes.

The bay is peaceful. The colors of the sky and water are becoming deeper and darker as the minutes pass. The water slapping on the hull and the hum of the rigging are the only sounds heard for most of the event, barely interupting the casual conversation. 4

5

The bay is deserted to the north.

Closing in on the mainland. Almost time to come about. 6

7

Even the raspy growl of the two big Mercruisers powering this muscle-boat at warp speed doesn't really disturb the situation. He's enjoying the sunset and calm water the same way we are, just a little faster.

Those of you that remember Barnegat Bay as an oily, weed filled pool of dirty water smelling of gasoline need to experience the bay now. 8

9

Years of strict pollution control have helped bring the bay back.

Those of you that think Barnegat bay is a noisy, busy, race track, crowded with muscle boats and personal water craft need to experience the bay near sunset on a weekday. 10

11

The muscle boats and Wave-Runners are mostly weekend folks.

Prepare to come about. 12

13

Mary-Ellen Lavin, long suffering President of the Ocean Beach Surf Club, on the windward rail, and Captain Ruth "Blind Mellon" Sadankas at the helm.

And the sun has dropped below the trees. 14

15

Time to start the engine and furl the sails as the wind drops. Time for running lights as well.

A view to the north, with the island formerly occupied by Charles Hankins, builder of most of the islands wooden surf boats and National Endowement For The Arts award winner, visible in the center. Rumors are that Robert DeNiro now summers there. 16

17

Rounding "the horn", we encounter a family of swans just off the bay beach.

A nice Bayliner tied up for the night, on the way back to the slip. Time to secure the boat, secure a plate of spaghetti and meatballs, secure a glass of wine, and... Unload the digital camera to see if the pictures come close to capturing the event.
What a nice surprise. They do.
