A last afternoon sail on Barnegat Bay.

Ocean Beach Unit 1
Lavallette, New Jersey

1

A great late fall afternoon in Barnegat Bay, sailing northwest on a gentle breeze.

Kayak off the starboard beam and just enough wind to fill the sails. 2

3

Jib's luffing, prepare to come about.

Passing close by, on towards the bay side of Monterey Beach. Ruth at the helm and main sheet, Edward on the jib sheet. 4

5

Time to come about, plenty of depth, not so much distance.

Head on. Great reflection in the water. 6

7

Just at the right moment, the breeze freshens a bit. Heeling gently.

She's got a "bone in her teeth". The boat... Ruth is fine. 8

9

The business end, close up.

A little gurgling in the wake as she passes by. 10

11

The Lavallette water tower in the distance.

Ok... Who has the right-of-way here? The answer is found in an ancient Chinese proverb: Big boat go first. 12

13

Nothing like a gentle sail on a picture perfect day.

Looking forward. 14

15

A nice view in any direction.

This is the money shot.
Denise Connor at the helm?
16

17

Kayak in tow.

So close to land, yet in a completely different world. At least for a little while. 18

19

This is what it's all about.

Sun's already sinking lower. A good two hours left anyway. 20
